What is talented and gifted?
Talented and gifted (TAG) children demonstrate significantly above average intelligence or talents in one or more areas. They require modifications to their educational experiences to learn and realize their potential.
Why test for TAG?
TAG information can be used to help with educational planning or decision-making. In school settings, teachers may refer students for testing due to the exceptional skills that they are demonstrating in the classroom setting. In some cases, a parent might choose to have their child tested privately to obtain additional information that can be used for TAG eligibility. At Honeycomb Psychology, we administer state-approved tests for the talented and gifted that can be used to inform educational placement/modification.
How do you assess for TAG?
At Honeycomb Psychology, a TAG evaluation may includes the following components:
A diagnostic interview with the parent or caregiver that includes a developmental history
Intelligence testing
Academic testing in all areas of reading, written expression, and mathematics
Executive functioning
Social, emotional, and behavioral questionnaires completed by parents and caregivers
Input from teachers and review of curriculum-based measures, grades, and work samples
A comprehensive written report with results; DSM-V or medical diagnoses; recommendations for eligibility for school services (IEP or 504 eligibility); recommendations for parents; and recommendations for services in the community
A meeting with families to review the results, recommendations, and develop a plan for treatment and prioritizing services
